Sega trademarked the NFTs in December 2021

Those who have been up to date with the game news recently will know that companies see big money making opportunities in NFT. Many of these companies boasts that NFT will change the future of gaming for the better, but it’s still hard to envision a future where NFT isn’t used in exploitative ways like microtransactions. Last week, Sega suggested some hope by saying that it will not pursue NFTs if the negative reaction of the player base to them continues. The recent news, however, could lead to alarm among NFT rivals, as it shows Sega registered trademark for its own NFT in December 2021.

VGC reported About this news, said that the Japan Patent Office has just published an application for a trademark with the logo “Sega NFT”. Although the logo itself looks like a rough draft, it shows that Sega is quite prepared in case it chooses to jump into the NFT market.

Bring what?

Despite the logo and branding, it is still uncertain whether Sega will accept NFTs in the future. However, companies do not always take advantage of the trademarks they file. Since Sega registered its trademark before it was recently suggested that it might waive the NFT, it may indeed consider changing its mind. It could also mean that Sega is simply not telling the truth when it comes to gauging audience reactions, which, needless to say, won’t reflect the company well.

Ultimately, only time will tell whether Sega will decide to ignore its most recent statements and implement NFT in future projects regardless of player feedback. There is still hope that the company will stay true to its previous statements and acknowledge the will of the players. Had the company chosen otherwise, it would have been hugely disappointing, but perhaps not surprising.
