“I hope there are no more cases” Rafael Nadal shares a message of encouragement for Spain’s team at Davis Cup after Alcaraz tested positive for Covid-19

MVP of Davis Cup 2019, Rafael Nadal, who led Spain to their sixth Davis Cup title had to withdraw from this year’s tournament because a foot injury forced him to end his season in August. While this is a major setback for the Spanish team, who are defending their title at Davis Cup 2021, the team faced another defeat before their first game.

Teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz tested positive for Covid-19, that disqualified him from the competition and Spain was forced to call up Pedro Martinez to replace Alcaraz, who has been in quarantine since. Nadal, who was live streaming the action on TV, took to his Twitter to share words of encouragement for the rest of the Spaniards.

“A lot of encouragement to the entire Spanish team following the news we received today. When something happens, the opponent will back off. The most important thing is health and I hope there are no more cases. A hug for all! ” tweeted Nadal.

From the team that played in the 2019 tournament, three of the five players will return this year. Feliciano Lopez, Albert Ramos Vinolas and Pablo Carreno Busta was also part of the team playing this year. With Nadal, Roberto Bautista Agut without the team defending the title this year.

The replacement for Nadal and Agut is Albert Ramos Vinolas and Pedro Martinez on the team this year in hopes of bringing home their country’s seventh Davis Cup title, joining Sweden as the fifth most successful team with seven Davis Cup titles.
