Kevin Hart has the most popular TV show on Netflix worldwide right now. This Wednesday saw the streaming giant’s launch True story, an original miniseries featuring the comedian in a rare dramatic role. It’s something of a gamble for Jumanji so what, but it seems to have paid off with True story immediately raced the rankings to crown the number one TV spot on Netflix at the weekend, according to the latest statistics from Flix Patrol.
So what exactly? True story? Well, it’s best if you don’t know too much about the plot going on, but here’s a brief summary. Hart plays a popular comedian and actor known as the Kid – who is closely modeled on himself. The Kid’s successful life takes a turn, however, when his resentful older brother Carlton (Wesley Snipes) returns and the deadly explosion from a night out threatens to destroy everything. that the Kid built.
Suffice it to say True story saw Hart and Snipes engage in some seriously shady heck, leaving the audience wondering exactly what percentage of this was a true story and how much was not, since the majority Hart’s life is autobiographical. Also in the seven-part series are Tawny Newsome, Paul Adelstein, Chris Diamantopoulos and Billy Zane.
While Hart has received praise for his dramatic transformation, with critics also loving Snipes in the co-lead role and Zane in his scene-stealing supporting role, reviews have not must be all that is bright on the whole. Much of the criticism is being leveled at the predictable plot developments and mixed messages about popularity and subculture. However, it has to dwindle with subscribers as it is doing so well on Netflix.
If you haven’t seen it yourself yet, you can stream all the episodes of True story above Netflix right away.
