World of Warcraft is widely recognized as the king of massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Sure, it’s not the newest kid on the block, but it’s been a huge commercial and critical success. So you would imagine that Blizzard would be working on World of Warcraft 2, right? But is that so? Is WoW 2 in development and planning to release for consoles like PlayStation, Xbox and Switch?

World of Warcraft 2 release date and platform

World of Warcraft 2 is undeveloped so there is no release date. Even if that happens, given that the game hasn’t even been announced yet, it will be years away. There is currently no announcement so there is no release date.

Honestly, Blizzard will probably never make World of Warcraft 2. First and foremost, there’s no reason to. World of Warcraft is designed and sold as a product in development – known in the industry as game as a service. There’s no need to make a sequel as the team can continuously add to the original work.

Plus, Blizzard still makes a lot of money through its annual WoW subscription. And a new release will almost certainly split the player base, leading to more complications. In other words, there are plenty of reasons to keep developing the original game.

Will World of Warcraft 2 come to PlayStation, Xbox or Switch?

It’s unlikely that World of Warcraft 2 will release for PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch. The game was originally only available for PC, and that hasn’t changed in the past 17 years.

Of course, it is possible, hypothetically speaking, to suppose Snow storm Miraculously decided to develop WoW 2. Granted, given the scale of the sequel, by the time it’s released we could be in a whole new generation of consoles. Or, more likely, the rise of cloud gaming could make the need for consoles obsolete.

Blizzard hasn’t mentioned any plans to develop World of Warcraft 2. There’s no release date and no known platform, because the game doesn’t exist. A lot of fans would love to see a sequel, but with WoW’s continued success, that’s not likely to happen.
